I’m planning a trip to Cuba and I was curious if my Sony FE 24-240mm would be a good choice or if I needed the typical quiver of lenses. I like the idea of keeping things simple, compact and easy to carry but is it sharp enough? I did a google search and there seems to be varying opinions so I decided to test it for myself and hopefully provide a definitive answer for others who have the same question.
First, I checked DXOMark. They rate the lens at 26 on the A7R Mark II with a perceptual megapixel rating of 15. According to DXO, perceptual megapixels represent the maximum resolved resolution of the lens in a number we can all sort of understand. This number assumes that even though the highly rated sensor of the A7Rii is 42 megapixels, that the camera and lens combo are only able to resolve less than half that. Now, we all ran around for a really long time with cameras like the D4 that were only 16 megapixels and marveled at their image quality. The current Nikon D5 with the Nikkor 24-70mm gets a sharpness score of 14 perceptual megapixels which we’d all agree is no slouch of a camera and lens combo. So does any of this matter? Do charts, graphs, and numbers illicit a feeling or help tell a story?
I dunno, check out the video and let me know what you think. I like it, and I’m taking it to Cuba.
